Hip Replacement Surgery Can Enhance Quality of Life for Patients in DeKalb, IL & Surrounding Areas

Hip Replacement DeKalb ILHip replacement surgery can be an effective option for relieving pain, restoring range of motion, and helping a patient return to daily activities that were previously impossible due to hip problems. At Midwest Orthopaedic Institute, we may recommend a hip replacement for a patient whose symptoms do not respond adequately to non-surgical treatments like medications, physical therapy, and walking supports. If chronic hip pain or stiffness is diminishing your quality of life in the DeKalb, IL, area, the experienced orthopaedic surgeons at MOI may be able to help.

You can count on receiving highly specialized treatment at MOI. Founded in 1972, our practice brought the first orthopaedic physicians to Dekalb County in Illinois. Since then, we’ve continually recruited talented physicians with highly focused expertise in subspecialty areas such as the hip, knee, shoulder, hand and wrist, and foot and ankle. Our expert surgeons share a philosophy of practicing conservative orthopaedic medicine, which means that we view hip replacement and other forms of surgery as last-resort treatments. We are dedicated to working with each patient to determine the most conservative approach possible for achieving effective results.

If you and your orthopaedic surgeon at MOI decide that hip replacement surgery may be right for you and you decide to proceed, your surgeon will select the type of prosthesis that will best meet your needs and then perform a surgical procedure to replace the damaged bone and cartilage in your hip joint with customized prosthetic components. In general, when performing a hip replacement procedure, a surgeon will:

  • Remove the damaged portion of the top of the thigh bone (femoral head) and insert a metal stem into the hollow center of the thigh bone (femur)
  • Attach a metal or ceramic ball to the upper part of the metal stem
  • Remove the damaged cartilage surface of the hip socket (acetabulum) and replace it with a metal socket
  • Insert a metal, plastic, or ceramic spacer between the new ball and socket to create a smooth gliding surface

With a proven track record for alleviating pain and restoring function, hip replacement surgery is among the most successful procedures being performed today. At Midwest Orthopaedic Institute, we offer hip replacement procedures as well as a full range of conservative and other surgical treatments for fractures, arthritis, and other injuries and conditions affecting the hip joint.
